Developed by the German-born Joseph Pilates in England and the United States in the 1910s and 1920s, pilates has proven very popular with actors, dancers and athletes at the top of their profession. Drawing on yoga, dance and gymnastics, the technique is grounded in 8 principles, namely the center of gravity, breathing, concentration, control, fluidity, precision, sequencing and isolation. Pilates is practiced on a mat or carpet on the floor, and makes particular demands on the back and abdominal muscles, as well as the buttocks.
